The liquid chromatograph has become the most powerful instrument for separations available in chemistry. At the center of its capability is an array of new selective sorptive effects which are being harnessed to solve many practical problems. Research in this area is yielding new insights into interactions in liquids. The advances in liquid chromatography are too numerous to summarize in a short article; instead an attempt is made to review some of the more interesting trends.
