Boston Museum has a small stained glass roundel representing the return of the prodigal son. The same subject is represented on a stained glass window of the Cathedral of Sens at Bourges. The similarity between the two is important although the style is different. The window from Boston is Romanesque and is older dated around 1210 (Sens is dated 1215-1216; the west rose window of Chartres is from 1217-1217). The later representations of the same subject show the characteristic change of the attitude of the middle ages where remorse is expressed by allegorical figures such as demons, whereas; the Renaissance tradition is more natural, as can be seen by examples from Duerer and Rembrandt.
