Abstract
Describes the layered composition of magnetic tape and the degradation processes which can befall it--hydrolysis, lubricant loss, substrate deformation, and inherent magnetic particle instability. The author notes that, while the deterioration over time of an analog recording is gradual and discernible, a digitally recorded tape properly cared for will only last a few decades and will show little, if any, deterioration up to the time of catastrophic failure. He provides information on the care and handling of tapes and on storage conditions and standards. That information is expanded upon in an appendix, Ampex Recording Media Corp. guide to the care and handling of magnetic tape. -- AATA
