Few of Paul Gauguin's paintings survive unrestored and present their original appearance. Identifying and documenting those that do and revealing the changes that have taken place in the altered and restored works is crucial to reconstructing Gauguin's aesthetic aims. This paper, the result of a collaboration between an art historian and a paintings restorer, examines paintings from the short period of Gauguin's most intense experimentation and closest interaction with fellow artists Emile Bernard and Vincent van Gogh in the autumn of 1888. Works selected range from virtually untouched to significantly restored, including one example of an intervention by the artist himself.
