Contrary to the classic concept resulting from Baltic amber studies, the largest portion of the collected amber from Chiapas, Mexico was not derived from pines. Among numerous possible resin producers living in the area today, the leguminous genus Hymenaea seems to be well established as the source from concomitant evidence. The study of the Chiapas amber opens new horizons in the role of some of the tropical angiosperm resin producers as the source of amber not only in this area but elsewhere in the world.
