The physical principles of photoluminescence, of which infrared luminescence is a part, are reviewed to provide a framework for discussing the technique of infrared luminescence photography, particularly as it is applied to the examination of questioned documents. The implementation of the technique with selections of light sources, filters, and infrared-sensitive films is illustrated with diagrams of the spectral sensitivities of these materials, and with photographic records that were made with various combinations of these materials.
