This journal article traces the history and technological developments of single and double coated commercial paper in the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Developments and problems associated with the following machines are discussed: coaters (brush, air-brush, double, roll, air-knife, blade, Massey machine, cast, contra); dryers (drum, festoon, cylinder, conveyor air, arch, wheel).
