Abstract
This journal article discusses the commercial use of vapour phase inhibitors (VPI's) to protect ferrous, non-ferrous and alloy metals against atmospheric pitting and corrosion. Vapours of selected organic compounds condense on the metal's surface, forming a thin crystalline film which dissolves in the presence moisture to develop strong ionic activity which inhibits direct metal-electrolyte contact and increases hydrogen over-potential. Mixed inhibitors serve as both cathodic and anodic inhibitors. VPI's are effective in many corrosive environments, eg.: 1) tropics, 2) marine (high salt or chloride levels), 3) industrial (pollution, sulfur dioxide or SO2), and 4) galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals, coupled together in a humid environment. VPI's in device containers offer many advantages over surface coatings, oil, grease, plating or silica gel. VPI's are: effective immediately and continuously even in hard-to-service areas; economical; clean; perform well in high humidities (Rh); and do not interfere with the operation of electrical or mechanical parts.
