The paper describes three approaches to the problem of washing large tapestries, carpets, etc. The sophisticated apparatus used at the V and A is described and its method of use detailed. Drawbacks are also identified. The Burrell Collection has acquired a washing table and its use is discussed. In both cases, the method of conducting the washing process is detailed. An ad hoc washing method using a support of polythene sheet on a closely mown lawn has been used at Hatfield House. This method was as successful as the others, but relied on clement weather.
