Surveys the history and conservation problems of canvas paintings, with special attention to the deterioration of the textile support. A review of different typologies of textiles used from the 16th- 20th century is followed by a summary of preventive conservation measures for canvas paintings. The discussion includes indirect conservation measures such as environmental control guaranteeing constant temperature and humidity conditions, as well as direct conservation measures such as applying protection on the back of the painting. Also mentioned are the negative effects of restoration methods such as impregnation with desiccative oil or relining treatments. Today only a few canvas paintings have been preserved which have not at some point undergone lining or other conspicuous conservation treatments. The examination of the natural ageing processes, e.g. the extension of craquelé, can help in better understanding and interpreting damage or deterioration that may result in part from inappropriate restoration.
