The IAPH (Instituto Andaluz de Patrimonio Histórico, or Andalucian Heritage Institute) has carried out numerous restoration projects on large-format canvas paintings, both for yearly programmed maintenance and for special treatment projects centered on collections or expositions (the Velázquez exhibit, the San Telmo and El Salvador projects). The presentation deals first with common methodological characteristics and treatment criteria for projects at the Institute. The next part presents the current use of traditional relining methods in installations with modern infrastructure. Three restoration projects are presented, each with divergent technical characteristics such as date and means of execution, measurements and type of deterioration, yet which also present common features such as materials, alterations and treatments. Particular attention is given to the conservation treatment of a 17th century Spanish painting (Miguel Manrique: El Convite de Jesús en casa de Simón el Fariseo, 1647). To prepare the painting for re-lining, earlier inadequate lining supports and some patches applied in a 20th century restoration were removed. The original support presented extensive lacunae and tears due to biodeterioration factors (bats), inadequate handling or transport, and losses, especially on the borders. In this case, the painting could not support its own weight. In every case, the restoration methods used, each employing different materials (adhesive, stretcher), have a common purpose of carrying out a support consolidation, or relining, using traditional methods.
