The goal of the La Blanca project is the excavation and investigation of a Mayan city located in the Petén region of Guatemala. This is an interdisciplinary project between the Universidad de Valencia, Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala and the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia through the participation of investigators from the Instituto de Restauración del Patrimonio. Since the summer of 2003, when the first explorations gave at to the start of the protect, three other studies have taken place which shed interesting results on this Mayan city and its excavation, as well as its architecture and urban structure. The starting hypothesis that La Blanca played a relevant role in antiquity was confirmed, and novel architectural and urban features were also revealed. These converted La Blanca into a unique Mayan city, probably for social, political and commercial reasons, related both to its proximity to the frontier and its peripheral position in relation to some of the greatest metropolis that dominated the basin of the River Mopán.
