Abstract
The word FREON is Du Pont's registered trademark for selected halogenated compounds containing fluorine. This trademark is used only with compounds that are nonflammable and low in toxicity. With this combination of properties, the Freon products can be used with fewer restrictions than most other organic compounds. Many of the numerous commercial and industrial applications of these products have been possible because of the relative safety with which they can be handled and used. However, there are some potential dangers related to the physical and physiological properties of these compounds. A discussion of these possible hazards and other comments on safety are included in the following pages. The Du Pont trademark Freon is used with a number of different products but each one is, in reality, a different chemical compound with different physical and chemical properties. In addition to the general comments given here, more information about a specific product may be available.
