We must recognize a double paradox: use of collections produces degradation, and unused collections are useless. Thus, expanded use should be accompanied by improvements in collection preservation. Collection use may be expanded by more extensive, accessible collection documentation, by increased sharing of specimens and associated data within and between museums, and by enhanced interaction among and between museum researchers and educators, and other non-museum professionals. This approach requires new technologies and the development of new concepts. A balance must be sought between technology-dependent virtual reality and the use of real objects and experiences.
