Abstract
Information necessary for controlling insect eggs in packaged commodities by means of lethal low temperatures is presented. Time-temperature-mortality relationships for the eggs of 5 species of stored-product insects were investigated. Exposures of 7, 8, and 9 h, respectively, at -10° C were sufficient to kill 95per thousand of the eggs of Orzaephilus surinamensis (L.), Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), and Ephestia cautella (Walker); exposures of 28 and 62 h, respectively, were required to achieve LD95 for the eggs of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) and Lasioderma serricorne (F.). The times required for selected packaged commodities to become chilled throughout were determined. -- CAL
