Abstract
Hansanlu, in norhwestern Iran, contains an early Iron Age settlement this article discusses the various questions concerning the use of iron for artifacts at this site. Although there is good archaeological evidence for bronze working at Hasanlu, there is none for iron production there, and the source of iron artifacts remains a question. Some artifacts are bimetallic, involving casting-on technology, which is described. Some elemental analyses by the particle-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) method are listed, an the use of metallography as applied to iron is explained. A brief glossary of technical terms is included.
