Abstract
The materials and methods of manufacture of metal threads and filaments are studied microscopically and by energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Discusses three discrete groups: 17th-20th-century silvered and gilt copper; late 18th-century through early 19th-century silver and silver-gilt and Far Eastern paper membrane. Some suggestions are made for the cleaning and conservation of the metal threads.
