Scientific analysis of works of art and archaeology in Berlin goes back to the 18th century, when Klaproth analyzed series of coins, weapons, and statuettes. Rathgen continued this work after 1888 at the chemical laboratory of the museums of Berlin. The Rathgen Research Laboratory is responsible for the scientific work of the museums of Berlin. Its work, in turn, is supported by special types of analysis at the Hahn-Meitner-Institute, where nuclear research can be done, and at the Federal Institute for Testing Materials, where primarily nondestructive analysis is done. In addition, archaeometric subjects are studied at the two universities.
