Abstract
Wood products are frequently used in the construction of museum storage cases. Sometimes volatile materials emitted by wood products, paints, coatings, gaskets, and other substances incorporated into enclosed environments results in serious damage to collections. The severity of damage often can be related to the type of wood, wood product, or other material chosen. Selection of products can be based on a knowledge of the properties of various materials and on some inexpensive methods of testing these products. Methods to mitigate extant problems include vapor barriers, sorbents, and improvements in ventilation.
