Abstract
Facility management is the practice of coordinating the physical workplace with the people and the work of the organization. Museums pose particular problems for facility management, because the special needs of collections may come into conflict with the traditional needs of people and their work. The physical characteristics of facility space normally are determined by the activities and functions intended to take place within it. Museum collections storage is one type of facility space. Collections storage may be defined in terms of three related functions: maintaining the optimum environment for collections preservation, providing accessibility to the collections housed within the space, and arranging and supporting the collections in an efficient manner. The physical requirements necessary to support these functions must be clearly defined to ensure that the special needs of collections are accommodated. These requirements can be defined in terms of six facility management services: physical structure maintenance, utilities maintenance, cleaning, safety, security, and pest management.
