Abstract
Late mediaeval leather fragments were treated with different additives and cleaned by an ultrasonic bath treatment. The effect of chemical cleaning detergents in relation to the treatment time was examined. The best results were achieved by a one hour treatment of the wet leather samples in an ultrasonic bath cleaning with 4 percent EDTA. The tanning agent Sumach dissolved in acetone and water improved appearance, structure and flexibility.
