Abstract
Discusses the results of the analysis of 273 Egyptian copper-based artifacts, mainly tools and weapons and in particular axes. Most were analyzed by atomic absorption (AAS), a few by x-ray fluorescence (XRF). The general developments of copper alloying in Egypt show that arsenical copper was particularly common from the first intermediate period to the Middle Kingdom (late third to early second millenium) after which it was gradually supplanted by tin-bronze. Both alloys, including copper (unalloyed) were used side by side for some time. Significant differences in the composition of certain axe types and those for battle or tool use were found. These distinctions show that arsenical copper was a deliberate alloy in Egypt. Some model artifacts were also analyzed and shown to be similar in composition to their full-size counterparts.
