Abstract
This article discusses the importance and/or necessity of issuing museum catalogs. Although generally speaking, this appears to be a desirable, if painstaking work, to create and issue such catalogs; the question arises how beneficial is this practice, particularly for very small museums. Sometimes claims are made that are not backed scientifically by experts in the field. Reference here is made to the many small regional German museums in that country, where there are sometimes introductions and commentaries in the issued written information that are somewhat astonishing in view of the not so well known regional artists presented. Particularly in question are the qualifications of writers, critics and others, who often present a rather biased view of art movements, and especially of individual artists. This article cautions against unnecessary papers and catalogs unless they are really warranted because of the size, quality and uniqueness of an exhibit.
