Four phenolic compounds and one mixture of two phenols showed exceptionally high levels of repellency to adults of the confused flour beetle, Tribolium confusum Jacqueline duVal. Sixteen other phenols and five mixtures equalled or exceeded the repellency of the standard pyrethrins synergized with piperonyl butoxide. The potential for development of some of the most effective phenols as repellents is enhanced by the fact that they can be synthesized readily from commercially available, inexpensive, raw materials.
