Abstract
Space is a valuable resource. Good space management provides for high employee morale and productivity, and the proper care and preservation of museum collections. Space management is an integral part of conservation and collections management. Like collections, space can be classified, inventoried, and managed using computer technology within a defined information architecture. The results are more efficient use of existing space, better planning for new space, and improved facility maintenance. The recent experiences of the Smithsonian Institution in the development of a space management program, including functional definitions for space and facility services, are enumerated.
