Abstract
The Textile Conservation Department of the North West Museum and Art Gallery Service has, since its inception in 1968, received for conservation ancient Egyptian textiles from major collections held in two museums in the area. During the early years the textiles tended to be small two-dimensional fragments bearing tapestry woven detail. However the receipt, in 1981, of the crumpled remains of a Coptic period tunic from one of these institutions, Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, Lancashire, promised an exciting deviation from this pattern and has been led over the past seven years to the conservation of a further three tunics from this primary collection. This article documents the case histories of the four tunics and details the method of full support designed to impose minimum stress during conservation, whilst providing sufficient strength to permit the safe exhibition of comprehensive garment forms. -- CAL
