Abstract
In 1980 three sets of samples from Egyptian mummy wrappings were rediscovered in the Department of Textile Industries at the University of Leeds. Accompanying documentation, dated 1907 and 1908, indicated that the samples were given to Mr. P.M. Evans (Clothworkers' Hall, Mincing Lane, London) by Margaret A. Murray. Ultimately the textiles were donated to the Textile Museum of the University of Leeds. One set of textile samples was from Ta-aath a XXVIth Dynasty mummy which was initially in private ownership, probably unwrapped in London, and transferred ultimately to the Manchester Museum in 1948. The other two sets come from the mummies of the Two Brothers, excavated by Sir Flinders Petrie and given to the Manchester Museum where they were unwrapped by an interdisciplinary team led by Margaret A. Murray. This paper gives an account of the recent history of these samples and presents an assessment of their condition in terms of known and suspected past treatments and storage conditions. In addition the results of the recent technical analysis are included.
