Organic pigments in samples of paints, inks, etc., may be identified by solution spectrophotometry. The sample is extracted in a sequence of four solvents. Any colored solutions are measured on a spectrophotometer and the shape of the log-absorbance curve is compared with over 400 curves of 175 organic pigments in several solvents from a reference library.
