This book and a companion volume, Completing the Painting, were written for the general public to accompany an exhibition at the Tate Gallery on the history and production of art materials. In celebration of its 150th anniversary as a supplier of art materials, or artists' colourman, Winsor & Newton sponsored the exhibit and publications and made its extensive records available. There are brief sections on materials used in selected paintings, on the history of pigments, and on the art material industry. Pigment analysis was done at the Courtauld Institute and technological investigation at the Tate. See also 20-621. -- AATA
