Abstract
Five different resin emulsions based on poly(vinyl acetate) were tested as paper adhesives by mounting Japanese paper tissue onto filter paper. Four adhesives were internally plasticized, one externally plasticized with an addition of 10.5% starch paste. The externally plasticized poly(vinyl acetate), Adhesin 22 (Henkel Chemical Co.) proved superior both in application and after aging at 88.5 Ö5 3°C and 3.5% R.H. for 500 hours. This disproves the theory that only internally plasticized resins are useful in restoration. The differences in test results for the five adhesives from two German manufacturers show that it is not enough to know the chemical composition of an adhesive, even if it comes from a reliable manufacturer, but that every adhesive should be tested for its applicability before it can be accepted for use in conservation. -- AATA
