Abstract
The book begins with an introductory discussion on the development of scientific archaeology during the 19th Century and on general dating concepts. There follow chapters discussing in some detail the developmental history, and on a basic level, the scientific concepts and technology of numerous archaeological dating methods. Included are dendrochronology, carbon 14, potassium-argon, rubidium-strontium, protactinium-thorium, fluorine, oxygen isotope, fission track, obsidian, thermoluminescence, grain and corn analysis, trace element analysis, and neutron activation analysis. There is also a chapter on noteworthy fakes. The book concludes with chapters on basic questions of methodology in modern archaeology. The bibliography is keyed to the chapters. -- AATA
