Abstract
Reviews the history and technqiue of crayon enlargements, including negative and print produciton, and discusses problems and treatments with reference to three portraits: the Dowell, Walker and Josephine Logue portraits. Treatment included fixing with 5% Acryloid B-72 in xylene, immersion in water and lining using the Dacron method. Inpainting was carried out with pre-ground dry pigments. The Walker portrait was lightly bleached and leafcast. Aqueous treatment of the Dogue portrait being impossible, it was repaired and lined with Japanese paper, and rehumidified from the reverse. Dry pigments and ethanol with droplets of PVA AYAA resin were used for inpainting.
