Abstract
An interim report on research into the abrading potential of some materials used in the interleaving of historic photographic albums and prints is presented. The test method employed a manually operated rub tester called the UGRA abrasion tester (Huber). Three materials were tested: a buffered bond paper, 100% cotton photographic storage paper, 120g/m2, and an acid free, unbuffered tissue, 0.001 in. All three are commonly employed for interleaving. The extent of rubbing inflicted on the photograph (RC glossy print) was determined using a colorimeter, found to be the most effective and sensitive instrument. The bond paper was the most abrasive, the photographic storage paper the least.
