Abstract
The results of experiments on the possible use of microwave drying for wet textiles are described. They are described as satisfactory when using the special equipment devised by the group. The possibility of controlling the conveyor belt speed (i.e. the rate at which the textiles pass through the microwaves) and the intensity of the microwave generation means that it is possible to control the extent but judgement must be suspended for those containing synthetic fibres where the high molecular weight material and additives could cause problems. Materials such as ivory, mother-of-pearl, bone, should be considered carefully and preliminary tests carried out. In any case, use of the method on textiles containing metals is definitely to be avoided. Micro wave drying is especially useful for those textiles which absorb a lot of water, when the time saved over simple air drying is considerable. Very large textiles present most problems, but the modular system of this type of microwave equipment allows adaptation to large sizes.
