Abstract
The authors propose a reason for the difference in string length at the c key in surviving Italian plucked string instruments. It is related to a change from copper alloy wire in old wing-shaped Italian harpsichords to use of hard-drawn iron wire in more modern instruments. Details about the mechanical properties of wire are included.
