The author gives a brief description of the papyrus plant and the manufacture of papyrus paper. He also reports on thermoanalytical investigations using mass spectrometry and optical and electron microscopy on excavated Egyptian papyri writings. Conclusions regarding composition, manufacture and decay are given.
