Abstract
Industrial experiences with and potential uses for nonwood plant fibers in papermaking were the subjects of discussions held during the TAPPI Nonwood Plant Fibers Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia during October 1973. Speakers from the United States were joined by colleagues from Argentina, Australia, Egypt, Greece, India, Mexico and Venezuela. From their reports and discussions emerged a picture of the progress, problems, and potential of nonwood plant fiber pulping around the world. This article surveys the Conference and mentions the following areas of interest: processing of straws, bagasse, bamboo and abaca. Also discussed was the projected use of kenaf to supplement pulpwoods for alleviating paper shortages. Physical properties of these nonwood plant fibers as related to their archival value were not mentioned. -- AATA
