Total land subsidence, due to sediment compaction, of Venice for the period 1930 through 1973 has been about 15 cm., due to ground water withdrawals at the nearby industrial port of Marghera. It is predicted that the total further subsidence, if withdrawals are kept constant in future, will be only about 3 cm.; this prediction is based on sparse data and is of a preliminary nature. -- AATA
