Abstract
This paper attempts to look objectively at some of the conservation methods for waterlogged wood and their possible application to the treatment of large structures. Each treatment method is assessed in terms of certain criteria related to the research and display requirements for the object, previous successful use of particular treatments and the time involved, safety factors and operational requirements, and the need for specialist operators, etc. Among the methods discussed are dehydration, freeze-drying, resin impregnation and polymerization, PEG treatments, and air-drying.
