Art historians function at different levels, from museum curator to undergraduate student; Their motivation and ability differ and the approach in any technical course should vary accordingly. The ethical basis of a technical course related to conservation for art-history students at first-degree level is considered, and the content of the course offered at Gateshead, for Newcastle Polytechnic art-history students is briefly described.
