Abstract
The removal of stratigraphic sections or sedimentary peels from earth surfaces has been applied to the field of archaeology where it has found many applications. It is a useful method for studying and preserving the stratigraphy of an excavating away from the site. It is also useful in the context of a museum or educational display to explain the work of the archaeologist. While a number of adhesives has been suggested for use in taking such sections, none has proven successful under the field conditions found in Japan. In particular, cellulose nitrate, an adhesive used for making sections in Europe, was unsuccessfully applied to the dense and moist earth sections frequently found at Japanese excavation sites. This paper will outline a set of procedures, and describe a specially formulated adhesive, used to make stratigraphic sections in Japan.
