Abstract
The conservation of the shroud of Bishop Gunther of Bamberg who died in 1065 is discussed. His tomb was opened in 1830 and the shroud discovered. It was badly damaged but was treated at that time and was found to be a silk tapestry. In 1894 it was restored but the pieces were disarranged and the tapestry was glued backwards to a piece of brown chiffon. In recent treatment the glue and chiffon have been removed and the fragments re-arranged properly. It was then mounted by sewing with silk thread to a felt covered board and is kept under glass. Two veils, one from the tomb of Pope Clemens II, found in Bamberg Cathedral and one from the tomb of emperor Henry III, found in Speyer Cathedral were also cleaned and mounted with thread to crepeline.
