A study of blanching was conducted to distinguish between alterations in color and the more general blanching of varnish. An inventory was made of a number of instances of blanching recently noted by the Service de Restauration des Peintures des Musees Nationaux. Results were given of a collaborative study with the Laboratoire de Recherche des Musees de France on a painting by Romanelli. This study connected blanching in this specific case to an alteration of the binder by reaction with oxygen or water vapor in the air. A specific satisfactory treatment was recommended but it would have been better to provide more specific information about the product which was used (which works through chemical reaction) and to observe the treated panel over time.
