Abstract
Excavated wall-painting fragments from the Roman period are assembled like puzzles; To reconstruct these, research has been centered on the chemistry of the mortar and the pigments. Conservation methods are compared; The best method is to avoid solvents. Fragments can be hardened with an ester silicic acid and arranged in a layer of epoxide mortar or poly (vinyl acetate) mortar and joined together with honeycomb sheets.
