Abstract
Besides palm-leaf, birch bark was another material very commonly used in ancient India for writing. The birch bark is composed of several layers. The layers which remain joined by natural gum and with knots present in the bark start separating. This phenomenon presents a problem in preservation. There is also a weakening of bark material. Some basic properties of birch bark have been studied. The major problems for the preservation of birch bark manuscripts are mentioned.
