Abstract
This is a report of the examination of the Dragon-head pitcher with four pegasuses belonging to the Tokyo National Museum. It derived originally from Horyu-ji temple and is believed to made of silver. In 1988 the Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties revealed that the Dragon-head Pitcher is made of bronze. Then the Tokyo National Museum organized a study group to investigate thoroughly the material and technique of the Dragon-head Pitcher. The result of X-ray fluorescent analysis revealed that it was gilt all over with gold at first, then with silver, which gave a silver-like appearance. The golden parts such as pegasuses were gilt again with gold on the silver gilding. The research also resolved a long-time question whether the Dragon-head Pitcher was restored in a later period or not. The X- ray radiography proved that it has almost the same thickness from three to four millimeters even thought it is one of the largest pitchers among those donated from Horyu-ji temple. It is surprising that such a refined casting and gilding technique was established in Japan in the middle of the seventh century.
