Abstract
The author discusses the idea of open storage of paintings, suggesting that items in store are often neglected and that putting them on view can assure their preservation. It could also help to better evaluate the collection without diminishing emphasis on first quality objects. Library facilities and access to card catalogues and files could be next to the viewing area. In this way, the casual visitor with the excitement of rediscovery and the serious student can be catered to. The author acknowledges that there are problems with the scheme, but concludes that nowadays (1962) we have no right to treat institutional store rooms as personal attics.
