Abstract
This review summarizes the complex nature of the photochemistry of fibrous proteins. Photodegradation may be decreased by either choosing appropriate ultraviolet (UV) absorbing glasses and/or using specially developed sulfonated UV absorbers. The photo-yellowing problem has proved to be much harder to solve but deeper understanding of the nature of fluorescent sensitizing species naturally present in the proteins may eventually lead to solutions.
