Abstract
A more detailed treatment of the various tannage methods including their history and uses in various cultures with specific reference to resistance to humidity of the skins and hides in their different applications. Chrome tannage produces a highly durable leather with high thermal stability but is unsuitable for bookbinding because it is resistant to molding. In combination tannages, the first tannage will produce the dominant characteristics of the resulting leather. Headings: native brain tannages; smoke tannage; chamois tannage; formaldehyde tannage; alum tawing; chrome tannage; and combination tannages.
