The way leather responds to the environment to which it is exposed depends on the chemical nature of the tannage but will also reflect the nature of the exposure, i.e., whether warm dry or moist conditions prevail, or whether the conditions alternate. Methods for detecting changes in the leather are detailed and the kinds of changes analyzed. Good storage conditions are then proposed including methods to limit irreversible shrinkage.
